Should religion be taught in public schools?
The academic study of religion in at the college level, by scholars such as Houston Smith, Mircea Eliade, Joseph Campbell, etc. - as a sociological phenomenon is a valuable field. of inquiry But doctrinal education belongs to families and religious institutions. Not to public education. By definition the civil institutions of our society cannot take sides in promoting one religion over another, or belief vs. non-belief because they are commissioned to represent all of us - regardless of our belief. Any show of religious piety then in the civil sphere, will by necessity be empty of any meaningful content for believers, and annoying to non-believers. And we, as Christians should not forget how we have benefited from the political separation of church and state. People in power one day can easily become the oppressed the next, when the tides of opinion change. It is far better fight to preserve a state of politically protected personal freedom on which we can all agree, than it is to attempt to assert a position of dominance that can be won, and lost.
