Jesus and the Undoing of Adam: Introduction

the magisterial truth to which Athanasius bears such eloquent witness does not sit well with either

Calvinism or modern Evangelical thought. The same is true, of course, with liberal theology, but that is another story. The problem is not so much that Calvinistic and Evangelical theologies are all wrong. The problem is, they are out of step with the most obvious, yet deepest truth–the incarnation of the eternal Son of God. There is an alien logic at work in both systems of thought, which skews the truth and eclipses the staggering reality accomplished in the person of Jesus Christ.

Today, Athanasius is calling us across the ages to put on the patristic mind and think, indeed to rethink, everything in the universe, including, and especially, the coming and work of Christ. He bids us to take the fact that God is Father, Son and Spirit seriously, and to bring the whole world of human knowledge under the cross hairs of Trinitarian logic. The Torrance brothers, along with Karl Barth and many others, have taken up the challenge. I offer this book as a hopeful contribution to the recovery of the Trinitarian and Evangelical theology of the ancient Church. I am convinced that such a recovery will not only bring renewal for the Church in the West, but will also cast a vision that will capture the imagination of the larger culture.

I am articulating the passion of the ministry of Perichoresis, which was founded seven years ago in Jackson, Mississippi, for the sole reason of promoting the recovery of the gospel. It is not an easy calling, and not one that I have been eager to acknowledge. It would be far easier to sweep our Western baggage under the carpet and go on playing Church as if nothing is wrong. But such blatant denial is not the way forward, and it is certainly not the command upon us. I am exceedingly grateful for Father Scott de Hart and Dr. Robert Lucas, both of whom have been baptized in the patristic mind and take the heat of speaking against the Augustinian captivity of the Western Church.
